FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Work Complete on Replacement of the Wheeler Memorial Chapel Roofing System.

6/19/2006 -

MERRIMACK, NH - David Aubrey Roofing has completed the contract for the roofing system of the Wheeler Memorial Chapel. During the project the barnboard roof deck was sheathed with plywood to provide a modern and uniform roof deck. The deck was prepared with 8' of ice and water barrier and then tarpaper to the peak. The steeple was similarly prepared. 50 year architectural shingles were then installed over that. The ridge was vented over its entire to meet current roofing codes and necessary to assure that the 50 year shingles will perform over their expected lifespan. In conjunction with the roof replacement, extensive repairs were made to the soffit and fascia systems.

In the earlier portion of the project it was decided that both of the chimneys should receive an external cleaning, re-pointing and sealing. As the Trust seeks to make the building more pest-proof it was also decided that stainless steel chimney caps should be installed. As these improvements were outside of the original budget of the project they were funded by members of the Trust.

Since the installation of the access ramp for the chapel, the front doors have been subject to premature deterioration from water splashing from the ramp onto the lower door area. A gutter system has been installed on the front side of the steeple in an effort to alleviate this damage in the future as well as making entering and exiting the building more comfortable during rainy times.

It was discovered during the project that the plumbing system was being vented into the attic and not the exterior of the building. This was corrected during the roof renovation and vents through the roof of the building.

One unfortunate but unavoidable result of the project was the removal of the weathervane from the apex of the steeple. Given the extensive deterioration of the mounting surface, the poor condition of the vane itself, the limited time to pursue alternatives and the prohibitive cost of any other strategy, it was decided to remove the vane for the time being. The trust will decide what may be done about this matter in the future.

We are very glad to have this project completed and especially grateful that all but the steeple was completed prior to the flood producing rains we experienced in May. This surely spared us further damage to the inside of the building.

Despite the best efforts of our roofing contractor and the Trust to avoid it, the project did go over budget. As it is not the culture of the Trust to deficit spend it is unlikely that any significant future projects will be scheduled until additional sources of funding can be secured.
