WHEELER MEMORIAL CHAPEL RECEIVES
GRANTS FOR RESTORATION PLANNING
Grants mark successful beginning of aggressive capital fund drive
11/21/2005 -
MERRIMACK, NH—The Trustees of the Wheeler Memorial Chapel
announced they have received grants from the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance
and Northeast Delta Dental to complete a preservation assessment and plan for
the 116 year old building, which is located on Daniel Webster Highway in
Merrimack.
The Wheeler Memorial Chapel is a 116 year old traditional
New England style church used as a community meeting place. It is
non-denominational and non-sectarian, and is owned and operated under the
supervision of an independent Board of Trustees. In 1889 Deacon John Wheeler
donated the land and constructed the building as a gift to the people of Reeds
Ferry, a part of Merrimack. The Chapel is located at 590 Daniel Webster Highway,
Route 3, in Merrimack, NH.
Bill Edler, a member of the Board of Trustees explained
that the Chapel is used regularly by many community groups and individuals for
private functions such as large family reunions and weddings. “Now, because of
its age, the building needs some restoration work. But it is very important we
preserved the historic character of the building, which is so important in the
history of Merrimack,” he said.
Funds for the preservation assessment are provided in part
by the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance, the National Park Service, and
Northeast Delta Dental, a dental insurance company headquartered in Concord, NH.
The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance is providing technical assistance in
addition to the grant.
